about

The most special musical concept that has been created in recent years in Greece. - Avopolis, GR / Giorgos Myzalis

From an ethnographic/anthropological point of view, I believe that ‘World Echoes in Athens’ will one day be considered a reference album. - Avopolis, GR / Charis Symvoulidis

This album is a very special musical project. The musician Mihalis Kalkanis together with the acclaimed Greek photographer Tassos Vrettos have been exploring an invisible network in the body of the city of Athens for a year, in the "sanctuary" of the worship events of various communities. Kalkanis records their religious songs and then edits these field recordings and composes music on top of them in the studio in collaboration with some other special musicians. ‘World Echoes in Athens’ has been the soundtrack of the photographic exhibition Wor(th)ship of Tassos Vrettos which was held at the Benaki Museum between 20 November 2015 and 10 January 2016.

“This project was a revealing experience for me in so many ways. Tassos Vrettos truly encouraged my idea to take that extra step and add to these field recordings my personal musical comment, always with a sense of modesty and respect for the original sounds. My hope is that this interaction between my sound and theirs comprises a representation of the positive elements of our coexistence with all these ‘other’ people. It is a journey around the world, a journey within Athens!” Mihalis Kalkanis
